cold then warm

It was supposed to be cold last night- a few degrees below freezing between four am and eight. So I took measures again, tossed a sheet over the camellia and youngest seedlings in the garden, covered up with pots and a stone weight the lemon balm,

even the piece I broke off and transplanted is doing fine!

I also sheltered the peonies with a grill cover and put a pot over the lilies again. The mums just got leaf litter heaped over them- and even the new green growth I was afraid to loose survived.

And the 'kiwi fern' coleus I'd fogotten and left outside under the deck again, was just a bit wilted with a few edges cold-damaged. Hm. If that made it through a thirty-degree night, I guess I should quit taking so many precautions. Corners of the yard seem well-protected and the leaf mulch is deep enough that probably insulates well.

For good measure, the figs and bay leaf had been tucked into the greenhouse (with shelves rearranged for headspace)

and most of the herb and mint pots went into the coldframe for the night.

But not again- looks like temps will stay above forty now.
Going to start planting out!
