garden

Well it's still pathetic, but I pulled the weeds and mulched some and removed a lot of plants that were just doing awful. Better that they throw their lives in making compost.
I'm left with four marigolds,
a few bug-eaten broccoli plants,
a volunteer vine I didn't know I had (zucchini or cuke?)
one stunted, leaning sunflower
and a pepper which is all leggy underneath-
this one I transplanted into a pot and moved to the upper deck where I hope it will get enough sun and produce some peppers for us (its leaves are a lot bigger and darker green than the three-year-old one) now wilted from the shock of moving:
Also I have a single, grand, healthy, vibrant green swiss chard plant!
I cut this down and ate it in a delicious quiche.
So now I know what grows well in this relatively shady spot. Marigolds, and chard. Good thing I like chard. I'll probably just grow greens and flowers in this bed next year...
