with some help I think I've identified the bits of succlent plant. They didn't do what I expected! All the pieces I stuck into pots still green, although quite a few of the larger crowns look like they got sunburned:

The little flowering stalks are actually opening into flowers!

The leaves did nothing so far. The crowns have tiny roots growing

to my surprise even this one, which was sitting dry on a tabletop inside all this time, has sprouted roots into the air.
