daffodils

The Daffodils growing in daylily corner have a tattered look. I don't know if it's a different variety from those in the front yard, or have they suffered from being moved?

greens

ate our first garden salad, made with these pickings from the overwintered Lettuce

seedlings

Second tray of Broccoli began sprouting. A bit disappointed there's only three seedlings, but waiting for more

white flower

One Strawberry plant has a flower!

flowers

Crocuses are almost done, starting to fade and look shabby

Daffodils are in bloom!

Grape Hyacinths are beginning to come up

and Tulips are sprouting all over the front beds

trees

The buds on the trees in front yard are nearly bursting. Soon they'll be in flower! I still don't know what kind of tree they are.

peas

Second set of Peas in tray are sprouting (the shelling kind). Six days.

And the one Isa rescued from tray being cleaned out, is opening leaves

daffodil

The Daffodils are beginning to open!

While the Daylilies in that planted corner are already a good six inches tall and lush

the bunch growing through the fence, and the ones in back corner (from where I dug up the plants for my corner) have barely begun sprouting.

more bonsai

I had to dig more Clover roots out of the carrot patch, these ones with better leaves atop already. So I potted them up, and one with leaves on taller stalks I trimmed, to see if they branch more when grow back.

Now I have four pots of clover-bonsai on the porch outside. Maybe a silly attempt, but it's fun to do.

celery

The celery seedlings all have their leaves open now

mango II

Making a second attempt at growing a Mango plant. When I cleaned off the husk from this one, found it was already splitting open and the seed inside had a sprout.

This time I stuck it loosely in the soil, sprout down (figuring the roots grow first) with the other end barely poking out. Covered with plastic and set in a warm place, like I do for the other seeds.

basils

The Basils in cardpots are growing well, but the lower level of cardboard getting moldy.

None of the plants outside in coldframe have that problem; probably because of being in fresh air and not so warm. So that's another reason not to start stuff too early inside.

All the seedlings leaves are withering and falling off; one of the Basil plants has three true leaves, whereas the others all have two. It's the same one that had three seedling leaves, too. I wonder now if every time it puts out new leaves, will be in sets of three instead of pairs.

Cat knocked the little plastic greenhouse off the windowsill. I scooped up what soil I could, but most got vacuumed. So no idea if any seeds got back into the pots, or if they were now at the wrong level. I wasn't going to bother with restarting those pots until it's warmer, so just stuck it out of the way. But found one little survivor opening its green leaves.

cold frame

I had to build up the coldframe one level higher, so the Peas and fast-growing Cauliflower can fit inside.

cardpots

Potted up a bunch of seedlings, into cardboard tubes.

Peas

Bell peppers (the ones from a fruit we ate)

Thyme

and Broccoli
that one little sprout on the bottom right corner is a Pea that Isa found when digging around in the soil in the tray, after I'd taken the rest of the seedlings out.

bonsais

My largest Geranium bonsai is looking like a nice little tree again

the moss took really well

Outside I noticed how quickly the Clover unfolded new leaves, even the ones that Isa planted after they'd been laying out bare, pulled-up, for a day or two.

So I picked up two other discarded ones (yanked out where carrots are planted),

trimmed their roots,

and potted them up, with some stem exposed- that looks like a trunk. Maybe I can make it grow like a bonsai!

birds

Yesterday heard the woodpecker very close, and finally we found where he was- in the top of a tree just above the old winter squirrel's nest. I got a few photos of him, using the zoom on my camera.

I finally got a picture of the cardinal too, from the window.

ajar

Warming up. I don't have to put cardboard between plants and the windowpane at night anymore, or pull basils off the windowsill. Still set the bonsai down onto the dresser, but that's just because I like to look at them. Leaving the coldframe wide open all day, and closed at night but without all the gaps stopped. Bringing the younger plants inside at night still, for now.

lettuces

The Lettuces have begun to sprout in garden soil! All in clumps, as I just scatter them into the rows, so soon I'll thin out the bunches, then set the Lettuces from coldframe into the gaps.

fresas

Shopping at a garden center yesterday, I felt so tempted by all the beautiful young plants they had- lettuces, chard, rosemary, broccoli, cauliflower. I had to remind myself that I have all those growing at home myself, thought not nearly so large and lush yet. But when I came across the Strawberries I couldn't help myself and bought an entire flat of plants.

Daughter helped me set them into the ground.
They look so beautiful and healthy

garlics

Dicing Garlic cloves for cooking and Daughter, who was peeling the skins off for me, insisted that we plant these three fat ones that were showing green at their tips. Only two-third of the fall-planted row outside are growing, so I tucked these into the soil in a gap.
