I rubbed a lot of very dark algae off most of the crypt leaves this past friday.
It felt soft, almost slimy. Came off pretty easy. I took heart from noticing that the newer leaves unfurling in center remain algae-free, perhaps the plants are just going through an adjustment period?
I was worried that rubbing all that algae off into the water column would make it grow elsewhere? but no- the filter did a good job of removing it, and the next day I had to gently rinse it, flow was clogged up with the debris.

One day you will get java fen to grow! Mines like a slow weed. I never remove old java leaves though. It grows so slow taking tattered ones away is taking back from the fern.
I hope so. Java fern has been doing so poorly for me in this tank.
I thought removing dead leaves would promote new growth- as the plant won't repair its old leaves anyway?
Not always if the leaf is completely yellow removing it won't hurt but slow growing plants use the green on old leaves to give them energy still. I would just try to leave them. I leave mine until they are brown.
