here is me being silly
This is for why I moved a bunch of plants around the other day. I'm going to get a real fish tank soon! A 20 gallon narrow. I wanted to be sure I am okay with the way it takes up counter space in my kitchen (there are a few other places in the apartment I could put it, but this is my favorite idea for a location) before I fill and stock it, because then it will be trouble to move again. So I cut and taped some cardboard into the same dimensions and put the fake tank in place, to give myself an idea of it.
I'm visual and kinisthetic like that.

I have a 10 gallon tank in my kitchen & I love it, but I'm lucky enough to have my sink in the corner and the tank takes up mostly useless space behind it. It's a great glow in the evening and a bit of tranquility in a naturally hectic place.
Something to be aware of though. After it had been there a while, with water changes & drips & such, it effected our counter quite a bit. We can see where water has made it warp a bit. If doing it all over I would have raised it up off the counter itself in some way. Ours is a cheap counter top and you may not have any issue, but it pays to be aware.
I hope you enjoy your new tank. What are you planning to put in it?
I don't know what my countertop material is, it's a rented apartment. Looks like granite but I bet is something else, fake. I do know the manager said some renters here have tons of fish tanks in their places!
But aside from that I've changed my mind about the location. I'm going to put it on a long, heavy dresser that sits off to the side of the living room space. I think the kitchen is just a bit hectic and with food prep and cleanup on that counter all the time I worry the constant bumps and vibrations might stress out the fish?
Oh, and I'm thinking of getting a dwarf gourami, an otocinclus, and a small group of either lyretail mollies or fancy guppies.
You're probably right about the stress & it is quite a lot of counter space to lose, especially around the holidays.
It sounds like a lively community. I just have some fancy goldfish in bright oranges and calicoes and a plecostomus. They bring some light to that dark corner. You can actually watch them from the living room too, so it's a good spot.
Well, I've moved it. It looks nice on the heavy dresser. I've been window shopping at the fish store and asking questions while I wait for my tank to get stable- pictures will come soon! Don't think I'll get an oto although they look so cute- they grow too big I've learned. Probably a small group of cory cats and less schooling fish, or a snail instead...
