first planting

Yesterday and today. I dug up and turned over the soil in bed 1, to plant turnips, carrots, beets and turnip rutabaga (not much of those as new and I don't know if I'll like them). Lovely to see the soil so dark and rich. This is the only bed I turn over- to break up well and pick out rocks so the carrots don't have obstacles.
Spacing marked- so I'd know how much to count out for soaking
Rescued one nice borage that was growing in the bed
I know they don't transplant well with the taproot but I shoveled it into a pot with soil mass entire, just to see if I can keep it going.
Surprise- one of the carrot varieties I got, from a company I hadn't ordered from before, was pelleted. If it was noted in the description, I totally missed that info. It does make the seed way more easy to handle. Downside- it probably won't be viable next year, and I didn't even use half. Maybe will plant a fall crop so it doesn't go to waste.
Small branches stuck into one of the newer beds, for pea supports. All I did here was gather up the leaf litter and pull a few weeds, then pat the soil smooth with my hand. It was so easy to sink the twigs- hardly any resistance-
and when I planted the peas this morning- sugar snap peas and golden snap peas-
I dug the holes with my hands, the dirt so soft and crumbly. Spreading compost and leaf mulch in fall is the way to go!
Also planted a row of swiss chard on the back of bed 8, where all the leafy greens will go.
