I never was too fond of this 'wizard jade' coleus- mainly because the leaf tips twist to the side. It's a deliberate feature, but I think it makes the plant look distorted, or ill. Well, it still makes a nice bright spot in my back bed,
so I decided to take a few cuttings for next year.
on the kitchen windowsill now- (with my very last tomato)
All the cuttings I took a few weeks ago have sprouted roots. Like before, the 'kiwi fern' coleus grows new tiny leaves on the nodes just above the cut end of the stem- often under the water in the jar. My other coleus varieties don't do this- they sprout higher up on the stem just below extant leaves.
I have five varieties saved as cuttings to overwinter, now. Probably a bit early- I'm not expecting the outside plants to die anytime soon, and I'll have to take several successions of cuttings off the current cuttings, to get them through to spring (unless I pot them up). Outside, my group of orange/lime coleus in the front bed is doing marvelous. Some of them have gotten really red, wide centers.
I had cut back my 'gay delight' coleus in its pot, and planted a bunch of those out front, too. They're far behind the orange/lime ones in growth. Won't fill in before cold snap gets them.
I don't mind. I like 'em there for now.
