more brick work

Yesterday I pulled the old bricks off bed 4, where the leeks are against the stump. Had to cut away some of the turtlehead stems and pull out a marigold plant to give myself room to work in.

Laid the new concrete blocks in. Some of the edges slope evenly, but this one ended up the blocks stepping down, oh well.

I was prepared to saw a wedge off of that cherry stump to fit the blocks through, but didn't have to, there was enough space (it's narrower now).

Laid blocks around the rue plant, so now it has plenty of dirt for its roots to spread into (finally). At first I had patched in spaces where the full blocks didn't fit, with older red ones:

Today learned how to notch a line score across a block with a chisel and whack it to split them. Fit these half blocks into spaces where the red ones were before, much better. Still a few red bricks filling gaps, but I'm going to paint those to match.

Above view the final two beds done- bed 4 and the rue. Not perfectly straight, but I'm happy!

Splitting another brick in half, I also fixed that corner on bed 2 where a full-sized brick stuck out. In above picture it's on the right, below it's on the left.

And replaced some red bricks with half concrete blocks on bed 6:

Then I sat in the dirt between beds 1 and 2, admiring some of the green that's still in the garden. Here turnips, marigolds, collards and chard:
