nice surprises

When you get down low to the ground pulling weeds, find all kinds of surprises that went unnoticed earlier. Like this:

fiddleheads!

They always do try, my ferns. To come up and thrive. But it is just too hot in summers here. I think this is another plant I need to move to the deep shade hillside of my house...

I was really happy to see this one emerging: mayapple. I thought they had died of disease last year.

I see at least four coming up again, very glad.

They emerge in a funny, folded-up shape.
