I picked three more cauliflower heads today. Very small. And yellow, because I didn't pin the leaves over.
Cleaned, trimmed and sitting in my steamer pan they look even more pathetic!
Cut them even though they're small because the other cauliflower plant with a head is doing this
growing tall thin stalks of its flower-thingies. Here I pulled the outer leaves aside so you can see the shape.
So I think the cauliflower is done! Rather pathetic, for all the gorgeous big plants they've made. I love how the blue-greens contrast each other here, the darker one of broccoli (right) and the paler one of cauliflower (left) (ignore the weeds!- the tall stuff in back isn't weeds by the way, it's flowering cilantro).
Well, I guess it's better than last year, when we ate no cauliflower at all. So I'm not sure what would make this work better- start the plants even earlier? maybe I didn't give them enough water or compost? I'm undecided if I should leave this plot alone for a little longer, or take all the cauliflower plants out and start now with the ones for fall. I think they take longer to grow full-size than I'd figured.
Well if anything, they look quite pretty in the garden :) And you got a couple of meals out of them!!
ReplyDeleteWell, more like a few bites! but it was tasty.
